When you enter a new variable in the File Definition window, or create a new variable by appending a prefix or postfix to a copied variable, that new variable is added to the dictionary.

Once the File Definition containing the new variable is built, you can then only change the dictionary variable via the Maintain Data Variables and Defaults icon on the PROIV Developer toolbar. If you use the same variable in another file, but enter a different length, this new length appears in red to indicate that it does not agree with the dictionary definition. The dictionary itself remains unchanged. Similarly, the Dictionary Help – displayed in green – can be overwritten for a particular file, in which case it appears in black, but the help in the dictionary is not changed.
