If a function in a Task outputs to a screen or requires input from a keyboard, it will try to start a screen Client to do the input/output function. The Client is terminated when the Task finishes. UMSG output may be optionally excluded from this, see Client Start-up, UMSGs, and Logging. Either a GUI (mandatory under the S/390 product) or green screen Client can be started via the Bus. The standard PROIV terminal type mechanism is used to decide which Client screen type is needed, (i.e. the PROTERM setting). A screen client can only be started if the P4API platform supports the requested Client type (GUI or green screen).

Platform support and programmer overrides are discussed below. Windows Client version 136 or later is required to operate with the Bus.
