Spooler Levels
These levels are defined the System Defaults ($SYSDEF) screen where you can also set display attributes and other parameters such as system video defaults.
These three levels (plus @RPTOPT, SET_RPTOPT, and $SPOOL) are depicted in the illustration below.
Report Device Specification Levels
The level where you specify the report device depends on your installation's requirements.
-
If your installation uses only one Report destination, specify this device at the System Default level in System Defaults ($SYSDEF) for the default terminal type only.
-
If you wish to associate a printer device with a terminal type, specify the device at the Terminal Type level in System Defaults ($SYSDEF). For example, use the DECVT220 terminal type to allow all users with DECVT200 terminal types to use one Report destination.
-
If you wish to associate a device with one or more terminals, you can specify it at the Terminal ID level in System Defaults ($SYSDEF). For example, use the terminal ID associated with your PROIV logon process (TTYP2).
Network connections dynamically assign the terminal ID to the process at the time of connection so the terminal ID varies with every connection. Therefore, this feature is only of use if a terminal ID has been dedicated to a specific terminal and will remain constant.

Warning: Associating a printer device with a terminal through the Terminal Default Report Device Definition screen ($TERM2) is no longer supported. The association of printer devices to a terminal must now only be defined via the System Defaults screen. |
It is possible to leave all three levels blank, in other words, not define any specific spooler destinations, however you are advised to make sure that the System Default level is defined.
