![]() Defining a Logical Device |

Up to 10 printer devices can be defined at each spooler level. The printer devices are mapped to entities called logical devices. A logical device is referenced by its LPx number, where x is a number from 0 to 9. Logical devices are pre-defined in PROIV and therefore cannot be modified.
You define reporting devices for a specific terminal ID via the System Defaults ($SYSDEF) screen.
1. Log on to PROIV.
2. From the PROIV Main Menu, click the icon to display the Utilities Menu.
3. From the Utilities Menu, click the icon to display the System Defaults ($SYSDEF) screen.

This screen contains fields for consideration when mapping printer devices to Logical Devices for a given spooler level. The fields are described below.
System Defaults ($SYSDEF) Fields
Field Name |
Char Type/Len |
Action |
Considerations |
REPORT DEVICE NAME |
A40 (Other machines) |
Enter the name of the attached printer, terminal, filename, queue, or logical printer that you want to associate with the Logical device. |
If a logical printer is referenced, you must enclose the name within parentheses. Values are LPTx, CRT (for terminal), AP (for attached printer), filename, queue name, or LP0 to LP9. Values entered in the next fields relate directly to the type of printer device being defined. |
SPOOL OK |
A1 |
Enter Y or press <Return> to accept the default. |
Y = Spool the report for background printing. N or Blank = (Default) Suppress this feature NOTE: This feature applies only to multi-tasking systems. On single taking system, this feature has no effect. |
QUE NAME |
A1 |
Enter Y or press <Return> to accept the default. |
Y = Direct the report to the print queue specified in the Report Device Name field. N or Blank = (Default) Suppress this feature. |
FILE NAME |
A1 |
Enter Y or press <Return> to accept the default. |
Y = Direct the report to the device specified in Report Device Name. N or Blank = (Default) Suppress this feature. |
PHY DEV |
A1 |
Enter Y or press <Return> to accept the default. |
Y = The report device name is the name of a physical device and printing is direct from PROIV to the printer. N or Blank = (Default) Suppress this feature. |
NTWK DEV |
A1 |
Enter Y or press <Return> to accept the default. |
Y = Specifies that the report be routed to the PROIV Windows Client. See Redirecting Output to the PROIV Client for all Platforms for more information. To enable this feature, the Spool field must be set to Y. Setting Spool to Y does not have any meaning in this context, but the PROIV spooler maintenance functions require an entry in this field. N or Blank = (Default) Suppress this feature. |
Defining the Default Logical Device
You can define a default logical device for each spooler level using a value between 0 and 9. The default logical device defines the printer device to be used for the spooler level that is used. For example, if the default logical device is set to 5, then the print output will be directed to the printer device defined in logical device LP5
Defining the Operating System Command Strings
You can also define the operating system command strings (e.g. Spool Command, Number of Copies, and Form ID String), used to print the report. These strings are only referenced when PROIV is printing from Unix-based systems and are therefore not referenced when PROIV is printing from a Windows or Mainframe environment.
