Logical File Description

The logical file description includes the name to be used when referring to the file in PROIV, information about the type of file being defined, a title, a related description of the file for documentation purposes and file default information such as user error messages and the variable qualifier if any.

The format of the record in the file must be defined by naming each field in the record and describing the attributes, such as field length, data type and display characteristics associated with each field.

These field names are referred to as file variables. A file variable may be defined as key or non-key, and may be used in multiple file definitions. A file variable may be a key field in one file and a non-key field in another.
