Open Client and PROIV Client Comparisons
This section compares the PROIV Client and PROIV Open Client, and highlights their differences and similarities:
Open Client Service Settings
-
PROIV Client session properties include connection information and interface display properties and are stored on the user's computer in the PIV file.
-
Open Client's service settings include connection information and interface display properties, but are held on the server, not the user's computer
-
The connection information (e.g. kernel server name & port) is defined by the Open Client Administration when a new service is defined, and is held in an XML file.
-
The display properties are mostly held in files on the server and referenced using the Resource Paths setting in the Open Client Service Settings.
-
PROIV Client and PROIV Open Client Session Properties Mapping shows how the PROIV Client Session Properties map onto the Open Client properties.
Open Client Application Images
-
In the PROIV Client, application images are held on the user's computer.
-
In the Open Client, images are held on the Open Client Server.
-
In the Open Client, the Resource Paths option in the Open Client Service Settings defines the folders (on the server) that are used to search for application images.
-
Images are collected by the browser for Open Client when they are required.
ActiveX Controls
-
In the PROIV Client, ActiveX controls are loaded and run on the user's computer.
-
The Open Client does not use ActiveX controls. Instead, the functionality has been duplicated using JavaScript objects in the browser.
-
Open Client installs with JavaScript objects that duplicate the ActiveX controls that are installed with the PROIV Client.
-
ActiveX controls written by developers must be re-implemented as JavaScript objects.
-
Open Client does not support the Javascript equivalents of dynamic ActiveX controls.
