Communications between calling program and target kernel are done by a socket call. Therefore connections are subject to the calling platform’s TCP/IP timeout period. It is advisable to turn on TCP/IP KEEPALIVE probe packets so that a problem with 'the other end' will be noticed at the earliest point.

You can make registry entries to control KEEPALIVE packet parameters. Keep in mind that not all entries can be found in the registry by default and changing registry parameters affects TCP/IP connections.

To locate information and articles on using KEEPALIVE probe packets to determine the loss of connection, go to http://support.microsoft.com/support/ and use the Search field.
