Open Client Display Differences
Open Client runs in a very different environment to the PROIV Client and this results in some visual differences. Open Client enables developers to create their own style sheets (see Open Client Customisation and Deployment for more information) these changes can be dramatic, leading to a completely different look and feel. However, the default style sheet is designed to allow PROIV applications to blend with a web page, while still looking much like a PROIV Client application. Open Client includes a compatibility style sheet (see Open Client Compatibility Mode for more information) that makes Open Client look as similar as possible to the PROIV Client. Even with compatibility mode, the PROIV Open Client will not be a pixel perfect copy of the PROIV Client.

Note: The default style sheet is designed to allow PROIV screens to blend with a typical web page and this is the reason for most differences. |
The following table explains the main differences between Open Client and PROIV Client when using the default style sheet:
Item |
Difference |
Static Text |
One of the most noticeable display differences between PROIV Client and Open Client is the use of a proportional font. This has the effect of reducing the space taken up by text and makes the text appear to move to the left. |
Edit Boxes |
Open Client displays an edit box as a flat white panel with a black border rather than the inset style of the PROIV Client. A disabled textbox has a light grey background. In multi-line edit boxes, the vertical scrollbar automatically appears when the text no longer fits in the view. |
Buttons |
Open Client displays disabled text in a lighter colour than the PROIV Client. Apart from that difference, the s look the same. |
List Boxes |
An Open Client list box has a flat panel rather than the indented panel of the PROIV Client. An Open Client disabled list box has no scroll bars. Images in the Open Client list box are not scaled, and only display the top part of the image that fits in the list. Open Client has a at the top of the vertical scroll bar that resizes all columns in the list, cycling over initial column widths, text column widths and minimum column widths. You can configure the value of the row (record) limit on list and combo boxes by editing the Open Client web.xml file and amending the COMBO_LIST_MAX_NUMBER_OF_ROWS default parameter value of 5000. |
Combo Boxes |
An Open Client combo box has a flat panel rather than the indented panel of the PROIV Client. Open Client has a at the top of the vertical scrollbar that resizes all columns in the list, cycling over initial column widths, text column widths and minimum column widths. |
Check Boxes |
An Open Client displays a check box in a flat style rather than the inset style of the PROIV Client. A disabled text box is a small white box. |
Radio Groups |
Open Client radio groups look very much like the PROIV Client ones. |
Lines and Boxes |
Open Client lines and boxes look very much like the PROIV Client ones, except that the disabled text is in a lighter colour. |
Paging Area |
In Open Client, a selected row in a Paging Area is blue rather than grey. |
Pop-up Window |
Open Client pop-up window does not include a PROIV icon. The window style is controlled by the style sheet, and not the machine's desktop theme. |
Message and Prompt Dialogue Box |
The Open Client message box and prompt dialogues style is controlled by the style sheet, and not the machine's desktop theme. |
Tool Tips |
Open Client tool tips are much the same as the PROIV Client tool tips except for date fields, which include the date format as part of the tool tip. |
Menus and Toolbars |
Open Client has no menu or toolbars of its own (apart from s on the status bar), but displays any application menus or toolbars. These menus and toolbars look the same as the PROIV Client ones, but they cannot be dragged around the screen. |
Status Bar |
The Open Client status bar has the status, function name and the mode as the PROIV Client. The other sections are the function title, the help , the PROIV Help , the disconnect and the PROIV icon that changes when the Open Client server is accessed. When the Open Client server is accessed, the status bar displays a rotating image either at the top right, or if the mouse is on the screen just above the mouse pointer. Note that if there is no status bar then this image will not be displayed. |
Date Picker |
The Open Client date picker is completely different from the PROIV Client one. It has much the same functionality and its display is controlled by setting in the message.properties file in the appStrings folder and the dataPicker.css style sheet in the appObjects folder. An edit box that is a date field includes edit assistance that will automatically add data format characters (such a slashes) and will parse the date for validity as it is being typed. |
ActiveX Controls |
Open Client includes alternatives for all the standard ActiveX controls shipped with the PROIV Client. These have a slightly different appearance, and may have minor differences in functionality, which is due to the different environments they are operate in. |
