The system safeguards that null values already in the database will not be overwritten with non-null data except when the data is deliberately changed by the program, or the database is unable to <Return> a description of the file.
The criteria to determine null data differ between various data items, applications, and environments. Therefore, the responsibility of null data recognition lies with the developer. Data entry of null values is maintained by the application. For example, a separate screen field may be defined expressly for designating null data, or fields may be interrogated in logic to determine if null values are appropriate.
