Some file systems provide methods of clearing an entire file that are efficient but cannot be rolled back as part of a transaction.  PROIV can only use such methods when the clear operation forms a separate, self-contained transaction.  The performance of a clear operation can thus vary considerably depending whether it forms part of a larger transaction.
