Trail: PROIV Documentation > Developer > PROIV Web Developer > Opening a Server
The first step in opening a server is to decide what type of server you wish to open. There are three basic server types to choose from.
An Active Web Application Server has all the capabilities of a Web Server, but also offers secure, scalable and accessible development of enterprise class e-business solutions. Opening an Active Web Server gives you access to advanced debug and development capabilities.
You will need either local access to your hard disk, standard windows networking access or remote TCP/IP access to the files and folders you want PROIV Web Developer to work with. You will also need access to a Active Web Application Server. |
A web server lets you read and write files using standard Windows networking, but also supports browsing files through the web server. If configured correctly, 3rd party application servers will process server-side intelligence but you will not be able to debug your server-side code using PROIV Web Developer.

This type of server lets you read and write files using standard Windows networking. You can browse your files statically, but not through a web server as they would be if published to a web site or intranet. Server-side JavaScript will not be processed.
